Who Needs an Extension?

You may need to extend your visa if:

  • Your course has been extended
  • You start a new course or research program
  • You’ve submitted a thesis but results aren’t finalised
  • You need extra time due to academic or personal circumstances

Key Requirements

To extend your stay, you must:

  • Hold a valid Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
  • Maintain Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) until your new visa end date
  • Provide proof of academic progress and financial capacity
  • Meet health, character, and English language requirements

Application Steps

  • Enrol in your course & renew OSHC
  • Collect documents – passport, CoE, financial proof, health insurance, personal statement, and other supporting records
  • Apply online via ImmiAccount, attach documents, and pay the fee (AUD $620)
  • Provide biometrics & health checks if requested
  • Wait for outcome – if applying in Australia, you’ll usually receive a Bridging Visa A to remain lawful while your application is processed

Tip: Apply at least 2–3 months before expiry to avoid last-minute stress.

Travel & Bridging Visas

To extend your stay, you must:

  • BVA (Bridging Visa A) allows you to stay in Australia while waiting, but it cancels if you leave the country
  • If you need to travel, you must apply for a BVB (Bridging Visa B) to return legally

Alternatives if You’re Not Studying

  • Visitor Visa – if you’re no longer studying and just need time before returning home
  • Other study options – e.g. transferring to New Zealand (with fee reimbursement offers in some cases)
